Planning an exhibition for yourself --  "Remodeling Calligraphy Gene" Exhibition

In May 21, 2017, at the invitation of Mr. Chen Qiuzhi, the artist, I visited the Sunrise Art Center with artist Xu Hongbo. I did not expect in Shenzhen Dafen Oil Painting Village, there is such a great cultural style private art institutions, the center took four years to build, is a way to return to the original style of natural simplicity, the exhibition area is more than 3000 square meters, there are different sizes of a number of exhibition showrooms. It mainly displays, stores and sells modern and contemporary calligraphy (ink painting) and oil painting, and Host a lot of artistic activities (including exhibitions and seminars, etc.). Mr. Chen also now mainly produces modern calligraphy, So we talked to Mr. Chen very well. In the meantime, we hope that his art center will hold some Modern and contemporary calligraphy (ink painting) and even contemporary art activities. He has this intention and hopes that I will get involved academically and plan to do my exhibition first.

Because in recent years I am mainly engaged in the academic activities of contemporary art as a critic, my modern and contemporary calligraphy (ink painting) has been out of touch with the outside world for a long time, The academia is not very familiar with it, In addition to myself, I have done many modern and contemporary calligraphy (ink painting) studies since 1990s. I know more about my own academic thread of modern and contemporary Chinese calligraphy (ink painting), So I had the idea of planning the exhibition for myself. I set the theme of the exhibition as "Remodeling Calligraphy Gene" to show the nature of the modern and contemporary transformation of calligraphy that reform calligraphy gene and the characteristics of my work, and hope this exhibition will serve as an academic clean-up of my modern and contemporary Chinese calligraphy (ink painting) (see "preface" and other comment articles) , and engage in academic and creative dialogue with the modern and contemporary calligraphy circles (ink). Of course, I hope this exhibition will be a prelude to a series of other modern and contemporary calligraphy (ink painting) and even contemporary art activities of Sunrise Art Center.

About the  seminar, I hope to start discussing on the calligraphy transformation and it's cultural significance. As Chinese traditional art of thousands of years of tradition, calligraphy mainly portrays Chinese aesthetic habits (character). The modern transformation of Chinese culture and art can not ignore the influence of calligraphy on the aesthetics of Chinese people. The seminar will invite many artists and scholars from non calligraphic backgrounds, this helps to highlight the current problems in the transformation of calligraphy.

I want to thank Mr. Chen Qiuzhi and his family for their support and assistance in this exhibition, their cultural and artistic feelings and action is the key of the exhibition to be held, but also the need of construction of culture and art of international metropolis Shenzhen.
